Collateral Shield

Learn about how p2 is building trust primitives with collateral-based listings.

What is Collateral

Collateral is a security deposit that sellers put up when listing an item. Think of it as "skin in the game"—money the seller locks up to prove they'll deliver as promised.

How Collateral Works on p2.market

When a seller creates a listing, they can optionally post collateral in any amount they choose:

Item Price: $1,000
Seller Chooses Collateral: $500 USDC (or $100, or $1,000—any amount)

This collateral is locked in a smart contract alongside the buyer's escrow. If the seller delivers the item as described, they get their collateral back. If the seller scams or sends the wrong item, the collateral is seized and given to the buyer.

Importance of Collateral For Sellers

As a seller, posting collateral is completely optional—but it's one of your most powerful tools for building trust and selling faster.

Why Post Collateral?

Build Instant Trust

  • Buyers see you have real money at risk
  • Higher collateral = more confident buyers
  • Reduces "is this real?" questions

Sell Faster

  • "Collateral Protected" badge on your listing
  • Rank higher in search results
  • Less negotiation, faster decisions

Build Reputation

  • Collateral-backed sales boost your reputation faster
  • Shows commitment to quality
  • Unlocks "Verified Seller" status

How Much Should You Post?

You can choose any amount—here's guidance:

Item ValueSuggested CollateralImpact
Under $500$0-$100Optional
$500-$1,000$250-$500Good trust boost
$1,000-$2,000$500-$1,000High trust boost
Over $2,000$1,000+Maximum trust

Common strategies:

  • New sellers: Post 50-100% to compete with established sellers
  • Established sellers: 25-50% provides good balance
  • High-value items: Higher collateral helps sell faster

Importance of Collateral For Buyers

Collateral-backed listings give you extra protection against scams and fraud.

Why Look for Collateral?

Financial Protection

  • If seller scams: You get your money back + their collateral
  • Example: $1,000 item with $800 collateral → You get $1,800 if scammed
  • Seller loses money if they scam—makes fraud financially irrational

Reduced Risk

  • Listings with collateral: ~0.1% scam rate
  • Listings without collateral: ~3% scam rate
  • 30x reduction in scams

How to Evaluate Collateral

  • High Collateral (50-100% of price): Maximum protection
  • Medium Collateral (25-50% of price): Good protection
  • Low Collateral (Under 25%): Some protection
  • No Collateral: Rely on seller reputation + dispute process

What to Look For

  • High-value items ($1,000+): Prefer collateral ≥ $500 or 50% of price
  • Medium items ($500-$1,000): $200-$500 is reassuring
  • Low-value items: Any collateral is a positive signal
